The Fairbanks (FAI or PAFA) Airport Campground is a haven for pilots from the lower 48. The facilities include covered picnic and group areas, all equipped with wood stoves and grills. These are fueled by the abundant loads of firewood that are delivered to the campground on a regular basis. A short hike down a taxi way takes you to an excellent briefing room with showers and snacks, plus the Fairbanks Flight Service Station where you can keep an eye on the weather.
While we were there, we also had use of a "community bicycle" which allowed for a short 10 minute ride into Fairbanks for supplies. It was this bicycle that gave me the idea for starting the mountain bike program at West Yellowstone, MT.
