We were very curious to see what the old Schafer strip looked like after the fires of '07. Although much of the surrounding valleys were burned, Schafer escaped any serious damage. On the way to Schafer we stopped in at the Benchmark strip, which had also been closed due to fire last year. It also escaped the flames.

Schafer '08
A rare sight. You don't often see twin engine craft flying into a backcountry strip like Schafer.
This is one of the bear boxes at Schafer. It's used to keep food out of the paws of the the local bears. If you look closely at the top of the box,
you'll see the very large claw marks left by a determined local bear.
Thanks to all of the rainfall during the spring and summer, we didn't have to worry about forest fires. The downside to that were the healthy
populations of mosquitos. Here Mark and Brad model their fashionable mosquito headnets.
A heavily armed Mark and Brad goof around on a nice hike down the nearby Flathead River.
